I met Joyce Darrell and Michael Dickerson this weekend, founders of PetsWithDisabilities. What an amazing couple. They are true angels in the work they do for these disabled pets. You can see their spirit and it definitely shines through to the animals that they have adopted and or rescued. Please visit their site and if you have time to volunteer, help fund raise or donate supplies it is a wonderful cause. Adoption and Fostering opportunities are available too! Pets with Disabilities is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the adoption of dogs and cats with disabilities. The organization serves as a shelter and an adoption placement aid for animals that have been injured through trauma or disabled by illness. Pets with Disabilities provides invaluable support and resources for the families of disabled pets and for shelters attempting to place special-needs animals into loving homes. For the animals it helps place,
Pets With Disabilities is a bridge to a better life; for the few that we cannot place, Pets With Disabilities is a lifelong home.

Farley needs some Special Angels.... Farley, a blind 2 year old St Bernard. Farley was rescued by a kind couple from a West Virginia pound. Farley was extremely underweight when rescued, back in October he weighed only 40 pounds. Since coming into rescue he has blossomed to about 80 pounds; which still makes him a fairly small St Bernard.

When Farley arrive at PWD we noticed he was drinking water in excess. He has been under extreme vet care since January. He was treated for a very bad bladder infection hoping this was the cause of his water drinking.

We are in the process of ruling out other serious diseases, such as diabetes, addisons and cushions. The water drinking could all be stemming from his lack of food and water the first year of his life.

Farley is a wonderful dog and navigates his way around the rescue thru touch and smell. He has a great temperament around all people and dogs.

4/09 - Medical Update on Farley: We took Farley to an internist, specializing in kidneys. We unfortunately found out Farley has severe kidney disease. His kidneys are the size of a cats kidneys. Farley's life expectancy will be most likely shorten. We will give him the best care and love here at PWD. Farley, definitely needs some angels to help us help him live as many years as possible. We are looking into special diets and holistic vet care for him.

Join in and Do Your Part! We all live in this world together and need to protect our environment. Saving The Chesapeake Bay and watersheds benefit our families, wildlife and ecosystems. Here are a few things that can make a huge difference if we all take some responsibility.

Drive Less – Combine trips /errands reducing air pollution reducing nitrogen into The Bay

Buy local foods from farmers, farmers markets, minimized further emissions related transport. This will also help support local business.

Plant native grasses, trees that don’t require watering and fertilizing. This reduces chemicals that are huge pollutants and toxin runoff.

Plant a tree! Trees prevent erosion; soak up fertilizers and other chemicals that run into the Bay. Trees also add shade to your home which reduces energy costs. Energy costs have sky-rocketed within the last year.

Become and Oyster Gardener! To grow oysters, each workshop participant builds a set of four 'oyster cages' made from wire mesh that will hang from the dock. The gardener also receives several thousand seed oysters. Go to: Chesapeake Bay Foundation for more information and benefits the oyster beds provide to The Bay.

Grasses for The Masses: Restore the health of the Bay by volunteering to grow wild celery (Vallisneria americana), and underwater grass and then plant in selected rivers.
